CHAPTER 24
âOf course Iâm not going to eat you,â I said.
âWe donât eat turtles,â Dooley clarified.
âWe do adopt them, though,â said Harriet.
âIn fact, our human just adopted all five of your brothers and sisters,â said Brutus.
âAnd they wanted us to bring you home too,â I added. âSo you see? We would never eat you or cause you any harm. You are Rhett, arenât you?â I added, just to be sure. Even though it still embarrassed me a great deal to admit it, it was true what I had told the other turtles: all of them looked pretty much the same to me, so whether this one was related to Max One and the others was not something I could determine at first glance.
âYou arenât going to eat me?â asked the turtle.
âOf course not,â I said. âLike Dooley said, weâre not in the habit of eating turtles. We only help them out when theyâre in trouble.â
âWe gave refuge to your brother Max One,â said Brutus, âwhen he decided to run away from our neighbor Ted Trapper, who was using him as a slave to create his Plurtles.â
âWhat is a Plurtle?â asked the turtle.
âItâs a plastic turtle,â I said. âBut that doesnât matter right now. So are you Rhett or arenât you?â
He nodded slowly. âYes, that is my name. But how did you know?â
I got the impression that this turtle was a little slow on the uptake. Possibly he had been dropped on his head as a baby. âLike we already told you: your brothers and sisters are all staying with us. And they asked us to find you so you can be reunited with them.â
âHow can I be sure that youâre not friends with thatâ Oh, no, there she is!â
He was pointing to a spot behind us, and as we turned, I saw that he was referring to Clarice, who had emerged from her hideout to take in the scenery.
âOh, you found the turtle,â she said. âGood for you.â
âSheâs the one who tried to eat me!â said the turtle.
âIâm sure that Clarice was way too busy to try and eat you,â I said.
âShe was punishing a bully,â said Dooley. âTeaching her a lesson she wouldnât forget.â
âThe lesson being that bullying isnât a nice thing to do,â said Harriet.
âAre you sure? She was creating quite a big mess in there.â
âAbsolutely,â I said. âClarice gets a little carried away when sheâs on one of her missions.â
âShe meant well,â said Brutus.
The turtle still didnât seem fully convinced, and when Clarice joined us and gave him a smile, he moved back a few paces.
âOkay, I never saw you there, buddy,â she said. âAnd if I knocked over your cage, Iâm sorry, all right? Itâs just that I was being swung around by that horrible girl. Sheâs really something. Very strong, I have to say, but I think I gave as good as I got.â
âYou really did,â said the turtle, still eyeing us with suspicion but warming to us a little now that we had explained ourselves.
